The Train Ticket

Ravi sat by the window, watching the landscape blur past. The train rattled along the tracks, the rhythmic clatter filling the silence around him. He gripped the old ticket in his hand—creased, faded, but still intact.

A flash of laughter echoed in his mind.

Twenty years ago.

The same train. The same seat. But he hadn’t been alone. Meera sat beside him, her fingers tapping on the armrest. “We’ll be late,” she had fretted, checking her watch.

He had smiled. “Relax. Trains take their time.”

She had rolled her eyes but leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. “Promise me something,” she had said. “No matter what happens, we’ll take this trip again. Just you and me.”

He had promised.

But life had other plans.

Back to the present.

Ravi’s fingers tightened around the ticket. Meera wasn’t here. She hadn’t been for years.

The train slowed. His stop was near.

Taking a deep breath, he placed the old ticket on the empty seat beside him. A quiet farewell.

The doors opened.

Ravi stepped out.

The train carried on—just like time.
