Passengers

I happen to watch this movie because of one reason; Chris Patt was quiet for the first 25 mins. I felt that one reason was all enough for me to watch. Before watching ‘Passengers’, I have watched the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. In ‘Guardian of the Galaxy’, Chris Patt used to speak a lot. In this movie, he was quiet. That was the only good reason to watch this movie.

‘Passengers’ is a 2016 American science fiction romance film set in 2343. The movie is directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts. The plot depicts two people who are awakened ninety years too early. They were in induced hibernation on a spaceship. The Spaceship was transporting thousands of passengers, travelling to a colony on a planet in a star system 60 light-years from Earth. The Spaceship is transporting 5,000 colonists and 258 crew members in hibernation pods. The journey is lasting 120 years.

I liked a few things in the movie.

Modern Adam and Eve

The movie is a mix of the Adam and Eve concept. Adam was alone in the garden of Eden, so God creates Eve as Adam’s mate. Same here, in the modern future world, Jim is alone in the ship. He disturbs Aurora’s pod after falling for her sleeping beauty. The word Aurora means sleeping beauty. This movie begins as if modern Adam and Eve are alone with all the facilities like mythical Adam and Eve in the garden with all the living creatures.

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan’s reference is fantabulous. The musical reference made me connect a bit. “Like a rolling stone” played while Jim is looking at the mirror, after getting out from his pod. This scene happens after the huge asteroid is hit in space.

Gravity loss scene

That was a brilliant scene. The way the water holds Aurora. The visuals are stunning. That scene has to be appreciated for its animation.

SOS

Under the title card, there are a few dots and lines. Those dots and lines are called Morse code.

Morse code is a method used in telecommunication to encode text. The characters are in standardized sequences of two different signal durations, called dots and dashes or dits and dahs. Morse code is named after Samuel Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. In this movie, it is shown brilliantly. That code means “SOS” – “Save Our Ship”. The entire plot revolves around two characters. They were woken up from hibernation due to a problem. They find the problem and rectify it. Jim happens to seek help from someone throughout the movie. Emotional help from Aurora and technical help from Gus through his access band. I happen to read about morse code after watching the Vivegam movie. I learnt those signs to play in the classroom. It was really fun.

The WHEEL

The wheel or the spaceship is a symbol. The wheel is compared to life. It an ancient myth where the wheel denotes a circle of life. Even there is a famous punch line said by Vijay, “Vazhaka oru vatam da, Jeikurava thopa, thokurava Jeipa”. In one of the Suriya’s movie, there is a nice, “Vaazhkka raattinam thaanda dhinam suthudhu joraa/ Athu Mela keela Mela keela kaatuthu thodaa”. These two lines denote that life is a circle. The wheel includes the different stages of life like infancy, adulthood, midlife and old age. Often they include happiness, loss, suffering and hope. I feel the movie carries happiness, loss, suffering and hope.

Comedy

I happen to notice a few jokes in the movie. The lab scene with Gus, the Chief deck officer, creates a lot of emotion in the movie.
