Ravi’s office badge still hung in his shirt collar. It was swaying slightly as he closed the car door. The day had been long. It was filled with endless emails, a delayed project, a manager’s cutting remark that lingered like a bruise. He sighed, craving the comfort of home but unwilling to face an empty kitchen. On a way, he picked up a takeout from a nearby hotel. Though he had space to sit and eat, he chose to pick it up.

When Ravi opened the dinner, the aroma filled the car as he ate with his hands. The dashboard light casting soft shadows on his tired face. For a few minutes, the world felt simple again, just him, the food, and the hum of passing vehicles. When he was done, Ravi crumpled the wrapper. He hesitated, then without thinking threw the left over outside. He further took his tin icecream and started having it. Completing everything, he tied together and threw it on the road side. Without hesitation he slid the car window and washed his hands.

Closing his eyes, he settled his mood with air, hymns from car radio and vehicle sounds. When the driver called Ravi when his destination arrived, he woke up. He grabbed his office bag, slung it over his shoulder, and stepped into the cool night air. The five-minute walk home stretched before him: a narrow street lined with quiet houses and sleepy dogs. His footsteps echoed softly against the pavement, and for the first time all day, he felt alone with his thoughts.

Halfway down the lane, under a flickering streetlamp, something caught his eye. It was a locked briefcase, perfectly upright on the pavement, as if waiting for someone. Its metal edges gleamed under the weak yellow light.

Ravi took a step back. He stopped a bit and checked around. The street was deserted, the hum of traffic now distant. The briefcase didn’t belong here. Whose briefcase was it? Why did they leave it here? These were the question popping in the mind. He glanced at the dark road, he light was in the far end. Nobody was watching. A stray dog padded by, sniffed the air, and moved on. The world seemed to hold its breath.
