Justification

Most of us are familiar with the song “Ka Sa Da Tha Pa Ra,” also known as “Vallina Ezhuthukal.” They are known by various names, including “Vali, Vanmai, and Vankanam.” Pain, anger, and aversion are the literal translations of these three terms. It then goes on to tell six interconnected stories with individuals who are accountable for what happens to one another. Each tale in the anthology touches on these themes. All of the stories share a common thread of crime, but they also address other topics such as compassion, greed, and loyalty, among others.

Episodes

The titles seen at the bottom of the screen during each short film syncs with the main title. They also give meaning to the stories. The titles are கவசம் – Shield, சதியாடல் – Conspiracy, தப்பட்டம் – Foul play, பந்தயம் – Betting, அறம்பற்று – Righteous, அக்கற – care

Plot

The film follows a factory labourer, a school custodian, a police officer, a don, a want to be con artist, and an office worker as they struggle with extenuating circumstances brought on by misfortunes in their lives. All of the main and supporting characters are brought together in a pharmaceutical institute. The narratives have a thin thread of similarity that is carefully maintained, and certain individuals will undoubtedly stick with you.

Execution

All six stories were written and directed by Chimbudevan, with multiple cinematographers, editors, performers, and music directors contributing to each. Even though the films look, sound, and feel different, this helps to maintain the uniting tissue strong. Another uniting feature is how the stories are set in various sections of South Madras. So we get Mylapore, OMR, ECR, and Semmencherry, as well as personalities from various walks of life and religions, all within a 30-kilometre radius, giving us the impression that we’re watching a microcosm of the world.

Chimbhudevan elements

Acting

We are compelled to observe the few developments that have taken place in Tamil cinema. Different characters broke and picked up on the hero and villain hues. They give the anthology a unique flavour. Premji, who is always single, is playing a lover guy. He is enticing and attractive. In the film, both Shantanu and Harish Kalyana carry a criminal band. Even there, they have a twist in the way they are becoming a villain. In the end, the character shift is awe-inspiring. Vijalakshimi steals the show. In several situations, her aggressiveness adds to the plot.

Sundeep Krishna is a cop in this town. He has performed as a cop, but with less hostility, and his outfit adds a touch of empathy. Venkat Prabhu’s emotional side is endearing. His narrative brings a smidgeon of tears to our eyes. The return of Sampath makes us happy. Priya Bhavani Shankar, Regina Cassandra, Subbu Panchu, Sendrayan, Sija Rose, Vidhya, and many others are relatable and strong. The supporting cast is sophisticated. These numerous characters appeared in the film; they only stayed for a few minutes, but they left a lovely screen space behind them.

Negative

  1. Too much to take in – When a character appears in a scene, we are forced to consider whether or not they had previously been in the film.
  2. Throughout all six stories, there is a strong desire to run as quickly as possible. It’s impossible to take it all in. That proves to be a difficult task.

We were reminded of another film by the ending. The way it ended was a fantastic way to tie the whole tale together. In the end, the characters establish themselves
