Ravi turned away from the bright light. He did not stop. He did not look back. His feet moved faster, as if he only wanted the night to end.

The street felt longer now. The street look and felt quieter too. Dogs slept near gates. A tube light buzzed from a distant house. Everything looked normal, yet Ravi’s chest felt tight. The glow behind him faded, but the feeling stayed. He reached his house. The familiar blue gate stood closed. Ravi fumbled for his keys. His hands shook a little. The key slipped once, then clicked into place. The door opened with a soft creak.

Inside, the house was dark and still. He did not switch on the lights. He dropped his office bag near the sofa. It landed with a dull sound. Ravi kicked off his shoes and walked to his room. He sat on the edge of the bed. The silence pressed around him. His ears rang softly. He lay down and stared at the ceiling. The fan above turned slowly. Whirr. Whirr. The sound was steady.

Ravi closed his eyes.

Images came rushing in. The briefcase. The door. The bright light, he chose to ignore. His heart beat faster. It was just a long day, he told himself. Too much stress. Too much imagination. Still, sleep did not come easily.

Ravi turned to one side. Then the other. The bed felt strange, as if it did not belong to him. A faint glow flashed behind his closed eyelids. He opened his eyes at once. The room was dark and quiet. He took a deep breath and shut his eyes again. This time, the darkness stayed. His body slowly relaxed. His thoughts softened. But somewhere deep inside, a small voice whispered. Some lights do not disappear just because you walk away. He drifted into sleep.
