Bakkiyam – An anecdote or monologue

Anupama Kumar as Bakkiyya, Kabilan’s mother, shouldered the movie in many scenes. She has a huge role in the film. From the start to the end of the movie she acted with ease. She is the finest catalyst of the movie.

Kutty Story

We have one Akka in our home, she helps my mom to do house chores. I tend to pull her leg and play with her. While I’m playing I started to notice that she uses few English words in her conversation. One day I asked her, how come she picked up the language. I know she didn’t learn in her school days. She told me that she learnt while she was working in school and a few other houses. That was when I understood her passion. After that, I started to teach a word. She now speaks the language well. That’s what I saw when ‘Bakkiyam’ spoke to Daddy. Bakkiyam said,

“I’m a servant in your house, not a slave. I know how to take care of my son”

That’s a powerful line. She lives a life where her Boxer husband died after turning into a gangster. She stood with him before dying. She protected him, but it didn’t make him survive. After her husband’s death, she knows how sports can change a life.

Fear and Strength

Bakkiyam was Kabilan’s fear and strength. His weeping after attempting to kill Raman’s uncle. The way he pleads due to fear. In the beginning, a scene where he runs after hearing her name. The mini flashbacks where we understand how hard her mother hates Boxing and how Kabilan loves it. She supported Kabilan while he was into boxing after getting married. She kicked him out of home when he started to get addicted to liquor. She stays away from him after that. That’s the silent support that a mother can give after losing a son. The final forgiving moment, “Ivan da ava en pulla boxing Panna kudathu nu Sonava”, that dialogue was punching. After that Bakkiyam says to Daddy,

“You take him to there”

I love Bakkiyam
